Mermaid tales

Hello, welcome to my blog where you will get to read juicy articles on every topic. Today I’ll be running you through what most people heard as kids. Books have been written, movies have been made about mermaid but they have not answered the question of the existence of mermaids.
Does Mammy Water exist or is it just a conspiracy theory?

Growing up as a little child in the riverine area of Nigeria, I constantly heard tales of fishermen who saw mermaids or mammy water as we know it while they were out fishing. One of such tales I heard from my late uncle. He described what he saw as a beautiful fair lady with really long hair, large green eyes, a slender figure and a lower body with fish tail. I loved those tales. I believed them.
Do they really exist? Was I lied to? Let me run you through a little something.

All over the world, there have been speculations on the existence of mermaids. The origins of mermaids appear in folklores of different cultures including Africa. Records exist of sightings, bones believed belongs to a mermaid and pictures of mermaids which could lead us to believe they actually exist. In 1493, Christopher Columbus in his journal described his experience with three mermaids that elevated themselves above the sea surface while he was navigating along the coasts of Africa which is one of the earliest recordings of mermaids.

Also, Explorer Henry Hudson in 1608, recorded himself and his crew while travelling off the coast of Norway, had encountered a sea creature that had back and breasts like a woman’s but had a tail speckled like a marcell.
this is an artist's impression of what the explorers saw.

In Egypt, there is a cave known as cave of swimmers that has drawings depicting creatures with tails swimming and men standing with bows and arrows.

The theory is that humans were at war with these species at the time. These paintings were done around the time early humans started sailing the seas. The inspiration could have been because they saw mermaids on their voyages and painted them.
In the 13th century, precisely in 1222, bones of mermaids were collected after washing ashore and they are till this day on display in a temple in Fukuoka, Japan.

I know you are probably thinking these reports are really too old to conclude mermaids exist, maybe I should present a more recent record.

In 2012, at the Gowke dam in Zimbabwe workers who were to fix pumps to provide clean water for residents were said to have stopped work and refused to return to the dam after they saw what they described as “pale skinned humans with fish tails”.

Still in Gokwe community of Zimbabwe, two young boys were reportedly murdered by a mermaid in 2017. The same area where the workers were terrified by the half-human, half-fish creature. According to the media, the boys were said to be playing near the dam and saw a creature and attempted to get hold of it thinking it was a big fish. The boys were drowned by the creature. There were witnesses including a friend of the boys. The disappearances, attacks and murders in the area made the local government authorities solicit for help from traditional healers who conducted a ritual to appease the mermaids of Zimbabwe. The ritual including slaughtering and offering of cattle and beer for the mermaids.

Nigeria’s very own Sir Victor Uwaifo recounted his encounter with a mermaid at the Lagos Bar Beach. He was at the Lagos Bar Beach at night when he saw a figure moving towards him just as the waves advanced and wanted to scream but she simply said “if you see mammy water, never run away”. His encounter with the “mammy water” was later translated into a song which became a hit.
Although most of the sightings and records are from Africa, there are others from other parts of the world. In places like Canada, England etc. In some places like Iceland, they even believe mermaids have the ability to control the weather.

It is possible to dismiss these records as myths and say mermaids are non-existent?
Were you also told mermaid tales?
What are your thoughts on the existence of mermaids?
Are there possibilities of the existence of mermaids that humans have not really discovered?
While airing your opinions, bear in mind that about 80% of the ocean is unmapped, undiscovered and unexplored according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

  2. I feel overwhelmed after reading this article. Growing up as a child I liked watching fantasy movies (with mythical creatures) and my grandmother used to tell me a lot of stories about fairies and mermaids,so I believed that they existed.

    1. Most children grew up with these stories and believed them. Could it be that the movies makers exploited the innocence of kids and just made money while telling lies?

  3. It's just a conspiracy that's all,we have not seen evidence of their existence in the oceans and what they would feed on or what they contribute to the water's ecosystem

    1. There's still a lot to explore in the ocean so we can't completely rule out their existence

  4. I do believe mermaids and mermen exist. There are so many creatures yet to be discovered and named by science. Recently, i read a thread on twitter validating the existence of mermaids and different sea creatures and i agree with it. Makes me remember Ariel from little mermaid and her melodious voice. I hear they sing quite well too.

On a lighter note, why do these mermaids have to be fair/light skinned na. Me i want to see a dark skinned mermaid biko

    1. I mean there's a large portion of the ocean that has not been explored and there are creatures that are not yet known to man. If there's a whole world out here, there should be a whole world under too

  5. Wow... Never thought these creatures are real.

  6. This is beautiful and well written. I also grew up with these mermaid tales. We were told that they are lightskinned, beautiful, with long flowing hair. One particular time, my sister told me of a story that happened along Ekpan-Edjeba road. There's a bridge along that road. She said oneday while she was going to college of Education, she met a large crowd at the bridge. On inquiry she was told that a mermaid had been spotted at the bank of the river to which many people confirmed they had seen. She said her i. e the mermaid's waist downward was hidden inside the river but the upper part of her body could be seen.
This particular story piqued my interest as I have always been fascinated with mermaid stories.
I for one believe in the existence of these mythical creatures but yet to see them. I believe one day, we'd see them.
    Thank you for publishing this

  10. Let's just say, they're stories well crafted and passed from generations to generations.

  11. Their existence can never be completely ruled out. There was a whole season of a documentary with 'never before seen' caught on camera footage of mermaids that ran on Discovery Family and National Geographic channel as of 2019 here. It was insinuated that certain experiments with sonar were outlawed because world powers actually know that these 'sea apes' as they were often referred to as in the documentary, exists but they'd rather keep the knowledge away from the public for whatever reasons they have. Nice article btw.

  12. Mermaids do not exist. They are imaginary creatures just like centaur and minotaur. Simple

  15. Nice article niro. But if you could garner more evidence to back up your claim,it will be more convincing.

  16. So mermaids exist last last. Thank you for the evidences and information. Nice write up.

  17. These are still speculations, but one thing is certain, if mermaids exists, then unless you are able to fuse it, You must discard your belief in God cos we have no idea that God created a fish-man hybrid. You can't call it a devilish disguise because there is physical evidence by way of anthropological findings of mermaid fossils.
But then again, seeing as the closest tales about these mermaids are written by prehistoric men and very local people who live in the remotest part of civilization and who can very well as has been observed in other cases mistake creatures they are not familiar with for special appearances like that of a mermaid's..
Lochnell monster and Big foot being examples in this category.
Until I see, I no go believe and if i see mammy water, I will not obey the guy who sang, I go run oo.

  34. First of all, mermaids do exist. I remember my brother telling me of a girl he dated who happen to be a mermaid. How did he find out? The girl told him herself and he saw signs. For instance, he said the girl gets dehydrated a lot and always want to have a bath or drink water always. The girl also drips water (not sweat) I mean water. The day he was to have sex with her, she told him and I'll quote exactly the way he told me. She said "Ezekiel, you are a nice guy but once we have sex, you will entrnaly be bound to me and you must not cheat".

Well, I do believe they exist.

    Nice write up

  36. This is so overwhelming because growing up there were different mythical beliefs on mermaids. Amazing article

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think this is an interesting write up. Mermaids are myths that is not to say that they do not exist though the existence is only founded in imagination as opposed to reality.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A fascinating write up I must say.
Mermaid tales are just as common as the story of human evolution. Growing up, I used to believe that they were mere fiction but now, I choose to believe that their existence cannot be completely given to the imagination. The universe in its entirety is a mystery. That means to say, there is a whole world of possibilities out there and mermaids are not left out.
I have watched so many mermaid movies and read tales and I absolutely find the stories intriguing.
I hope to be here when the mystery unravels.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Interesting. Always did kind of believe they might actually have existed or let alone do. Great job

  46. I've only been exposed to stories about mermaids but I go with the idea that nothing can just emerge out of nothing. This makes me wish to maybe encounter one to feed my curiosity more. Until today I had never put this much thought into the existence mermaids, I may have just liked stories in the past but this research really is an enlightment

    ReplyDelete
  47. I've actually only heard about mermaids from tales, read about then in books, seen movies about them but I've never seen one in reality.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Finally, someone says something about mermaids. Im glad im not the only one who believes mermaids really exist. This is a very intriguing piece.

    ReplyDelete
  49. There are many mysteries beyond science... they may exist but am satisfied meeting with people.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I believe they do exist, not everything told is a fantasy or fairy tail some have truth in them even though not scientifically proved, besides science can't prove everything.

    ReplyDelete
  51. And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life,

The above statement could have brought forth anything. So I keep an open mind.. Lol
